Maria Rivera
Co-Founder & CEOThe visionary heart of Cafe Rio. Maria brings 20+ years of culinary expertise and a lifelong passion for bringing people together through food.
Since 2008, Cafe Rio has been crafting bold flavors and warm memories in the heart of Berkeley, CA. We believe food is more than sustenance — it's a connection.
Cafe Rio was founded in 2008 by Maria and Carlos Rivera, a couple with deep roots in California's vibrant culinary scene. What began as a tiny corner café serving homemade tamales and fresh-brewed coffee quickly blossomed into one of Berkeley's most beloved dining destinations.
Inspired by the bold, sun-drenched flavors of Latin and Californian cuisine, Maria and Carlos spent years perfecting recipes that honor tradition while embracing modern techniques. Every dish tells a story — of family gatherings, farmers market mornings, and the joy of sharing a great meal.
Today, Cafe Rio serves hundreds of guests daily, sourcing ingredients from local farms within 50 miles of Berkeley. Our commitment to freshness, quality, and community has never wavered — and it never will.
Everything we do is guided by a deep commitment to quality food, community, and genuine hospitality.
To nourish our community with fresh, flavorful food made with honesty, care, and respect for every ingredient — and every person we serve.
To become the gold standard for community-focused dining in the Bay Area, where every meal is an experience worth returning for.
We partner with local farms and prioritize eco-friendly practices — from compostable packaging to reducing food waste at every stage.
We actively support Berkeley's schools, food banks, and neighborhood events — because a great café is more than a place to eat; it's a gathering place.
We source seasonal produce from farms within 50 miles of Berkeley. If it's not fresh, it doesn't make it to your plate.
Every recipe is crafted with intention and passion. Our chefs treat each dish like it's going to their own family's table.
We greet every guest like a friend. No scripts, no pretense — just genuine warmth and attentive service every single time.
Our menu celebrates diverse culinary traditions and caters to all dietary needs — vegan, gluten-free, and everything in between.
Every ingredient chosen with purpose. Every dish made with care.
Passionate individuals united by a love for great food and genuine connection with our community.
